These are typical Aanderaa RCM8 and Interoceans S-4 data sets (5 minute averages) as plotted against a ship mounted ADCP.

The data set at left shows the plotted variance in Water Speed from a mooring using typical spherical flotation.

The data set at right shows the same data from a mooring using SUBS streamlined flotation.

Note the improvement in data quality in the plot at right.

The significant factor is mooring line stability due to removal of the vortex shedding effects caused by the spherical flotation used on the first mooring.
